Hair Loss: Those suffering from Male Pattern Hair Loss
(Androgenetic Alopecia) have increased levels of DHT (dihydro-testosterone) in their scalps, and scientists concur that increased levels of DHT negatively affect the growth cycle of hair. DHT is one of many male hormones in the body. It is developmentally important early in a man’s life; however, it appears to be a cause of hair loss as men get older. DHT shrinks the hair follicle until it no longer produces visible hair. When high levels of this naturally occurring hormone are present in the scalps of men genetically predisposed to male pattern hair loss, the growth phase of hair is shortened. The affected hairs become smaller, finer and lighter in color. Eventually, the hairs become so small as to be practically invisible. If the process is not stopped, it can result in the classic bald male hairline. |
