Dieting

You will not be successful on any weight loss program without making intelligent choices about the food you eat. Success is about long term weight loss - the ability to keep the weight off - and it depends to a large extent on diet and exercise

There are countless "diet foods" on the market today. There is nothing wrong with much of this food; however, exercising your knowledge and judgment when it comes to these products is essential. Always carefully read the packaging, paying particular attention to fat content. Food marketers have had great success selling fattening food to unsuspecting consumers by putting titles like "low-fat", "calorie-reduced", etc. on their packaging. "Low-fat" is not relevant to the weight conscious consumer if what it means is a gram less fat in a product that has 6 grams of fat per serving! Buyer beware!

Always read the packaging and understand just how much fat you should be taking in each day.

Foods and Dieting:

Many experts agree that it is truly unnecessary for those wishing to lose or keep weight off to be purchasing "diet foods".

What are ultimately the most important decisions any weight conscious consumer can make have to do with understanding what is in a healthful diet. Once these basics are understood, eating foods that are beneficial to health and weight loss becomes a fun, delicious and natural process. The dieting tips below are well accepted basics from all health and nutrition experts. It is absolutely essential to long term dieting success that everyone wanting to keep weight off follow these guidelines.

1) Eat a variety of foods to get the energy, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber you need for good health.

2) Balance the food you eat with physical activity - maintain or improve your weight to reduce your chances of having high blood pressure, heart disease, a stroke, certain cancers and the most common kind of diabetes.

3) Choose a diet with plenty of grain products, vegetables, and fruits which provide needed vitamins, minerals, fiber, and complex carbohydrates, and can help you lower your intake of fat.

4) Choose a diet low in fat, saturated fat, and cholesterol to reduce your risk of heart attack and certain types of cancer and to help you maintain a healthy weight. Choose a diet moderate in sugars. A diet with lots of sugars has too many calories and too few nutrients for most people and can contribute to tooth decay.

5) Choose a diet moderate in salt and sodium to help reduce your risk of high blood pressure.

6) If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation. Alcoholic beverages supply calories, but few or no nutrients. Drinking alcohol is also the cause of many health problems and accidents and can lead to addiction.
