Cosmetic
Surgery
Cosmetic surgery is typically considered to be a type of plastic
surgery. Plastic surgery is the term used to describe both cosmetic
and reconstructive surgery. These two areas of plastic surgery are
different.
Cosmetic surgery is typically elective surgery, wherein an
individual seeks to reshape
normal structures of the face or body to improve appearance and/or
enhance self esteem. Reconstructive surgery is the term used to
describe surgeries that are performed on abnormal structures of the
face or body. These abnormalities may be the result of developmental
abnormalities, congenital defects, infection, tumors, diseases or
trauma. The goal is to improve the functioning of affected areas of
the body, and in some cases, to achieve a 'normal' looking
appearance. Most health insurance plans cover varying levels and
costs of reconstructive surgery, but not all.
Cosmetic
Procedures
There are numerous procedures included under the heading of cosmetic
surgery. Many have been available for years, whereas others are
fairly new. |

Almost every part of the head or body
can be cosmetically altered, from ears to chins, to breasts and legs. Some
of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures are outlined below.
Cosmetic Procedures
Botox
Botox® is a non-surgical procedure that involves the injection of botulinum
toxin into areas of the face in order to temporarily reduce or eliminate
forehead creases, frown lines, crows feet, and neck creases. Botox
injections temporarily paralyze the muscles that cause
wrinkles, resulting in a smoother skin surface. Recent studies have
demonstrated that Botox may be effective in reducing excessive sweating,
migraine headaches and muscle spasms in the facial area.
Breast Augmentation
Augmentation mammoplasty enhances the size and shape of a woman's breast. It
offers women the ability to enhance breast size, to address a reduction in
breast size post pregnancy, and to even out different sized breasts. It is
also used to reconstruct a breast post
surgery. The surgery entails inserting an breast implant - a silicone shell
filled with either saline or silicone gel - behind the breast.
Breast Lift
Mastopexy offers women the ability to reshape and raise sagging breasts.
Age, gravity, pregnancy, and nursing all cause the breasts to loose
elasticity and firmness, causing them to sag. It is important to note that
the effects of a breast lift do not last forever.
Eventually, gravity always wins. Mastopexy also serves to reduce the size of
the darker skin that surrounds the nipple, called the areola.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic
procedure used to repair facial skin by reducing fine wrinkle lines,
age spots, acne scars, and 'crow's feet'. Microdermabrasion
stimulates the production of collagen and skin cells, combating the
effects that age and sun exposure have on facial skin.
Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion and dermaplaning are methods of surgically scraping the facial
skin's top layers to help smooth out surface irregularities. Dermabrasion is
often employed to improve skin that has been scarred due to accidents or to
earlier surgery. It is also used to smooth
facial wrinkles and remove keratoses, pre-cancerous facial growths.
Dermaplaning is often employed to smooth out surfaces scarred by acne. These
cosmetic surgical techniques can be used on the entire face, or small
sections and are often used in conjunction with other
surgical procedures, including facelifts.
Face Lift
Rhytidectomy is not intended to reverse the aging process, but instead to
set the clock back. A face lift removes excess fat from the face, tightens
underlying facial muscles, then redrapes the skin of the face and neck. This
procedure address the effects of age, stress,
sun exposure, and gravity by removing jowls, fat deposits around the neck,
and the deep creases that develop between the nose and mouth as we age.
Liposuction
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that is intended to resculpt the body by
removing excess fat. It is typically performed on areas of the body that
don't respond well to weight loss efforts, such as the hips, buttocks,
abdomen, thighs, upper arms, and chin. There are many
different techniques of liposuction available today, including the tumescent
technique, ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty (UAL), and the super-wet
technique. A plastic surgeon will determine the best technique to use for a
particular circumstance in order to get the best
results with the least amount of recovery time.
Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure involving the removal of excess fat
and skin from the abdomen, while tightening the abdominal muscles. A tummy
tuck leaves a scar, the size of which will depend on the original extent of
the problem. However, it can greatly reduce the
size and appearance of a protruding abdomen.
The list above addresses only the most common cosmetic procedures. Others
include browlifts, camouflage cosmetics, chemical peels, ear surgeries,
eyelid surgery, hair replacement, nose surgery, and spider veins.
